The legal stuff

• This entire site falls under the Open Content License and Creative Commons agreement, and is not in the public domain.
• Content unique to this project is copyrighted � 1985-2007 by the History of Computing Foundation.
• The editors and contributors all have agreed that nothing of the material found here may be used for commercial purposes, but may otherwise be used freely except that the credits must be given to the rightful intellectual owners under the rules as stated under the OCL.
• Were possible or needed the origin and or authors are quoted.
• In the view of the rapidly changing locations and dead links that are so hated by all web users we have taken the liberty to copy all web pages and material of which material has been used in this project and stored on disk or CD. That is done because the editors found the material important or crucial enough to run the risk of loosing the material or references.

How we resolve copyright issues

• Sometimes it is impossible to determine the rightful owner of a picture or text if you detect such an omission and know the origins please let us know so we can take the appropriate action
• Sometimes a copyright holder does not bother to answer back to our request for republishing, in that case we assume his or her consent and publish with the link to the source.
• In case we cannot track down the source but encounter material on more than three sites we assume the material to belong to the open content domain and put the notice from the site we got the material from. When a claim is put to us, and upon our request there is a reasonable proof of ownership, we will change the copyright notice.
• Any claim which can be determined as genuine will result in asking formally for permission and when that is obtained the copyright notice is changed immediately into whatever notice the holder wants. In all cases where there is no legitimate claim we leave the notice as is.
• In any case where the permission is explicitly not granted we remove the material immediately, and of course start looking for replacement.
• Sometimes it happens that we have the copyright notice wrong, please mail us if you find any omission or mistake.

There are a few rules of thumb all editors use; see copyrights of pictures

We realize that the above outlines are not entirely legal but experience proves that it is the most pragmatic way to deal with otherwise un-resolvable copyright issues.
