Friden was the first company to develop and market a true multi user distributed computing system. This system was installed throughout the Singer Sewing Machine retail store network and was used to transmit on a daily basis sales and inventory data from remote stores throughout the USA to the Singer central computing location. Singer also marketed the multi user distributed computer system to other retail stores and organisations throughout the world. The Singer distributed computing technology was subsequently aquired by ICL (UK) who purchased Singer Business Machines in 1976.
